Galaxy Garden Update February 2025

The first half of January was all the seasons in a fortnight, and the second half was what I would call bulk growing weather. Warm, rain, cloud and sun causing pumpkins and cherry tomatoes to explode and drown everything else, whilst grass infests every garden bed.

I can feel a heavy week’s labour coming on to try and find the paths and buried plants again. On the plus side, the compost pile will be heaving once more.

After a couple of disappointing sessions of seedling raising I changed the routine with explosive results. I’ve transplanted the backlog of two seedling trays of mostly substandard little cherubs into the wicking beds and around the garden.

All of the wicking beds have now been refurbished with a layer of compost which will hopefully work some magic on the aforementioned substandard little cherubs.

Whilst refurbishing the wicking beds all manner of goodies needed to be removed, beetroot, leeks, carrots, kale, pak choi and lettuce, which will go well with the avalanche of cucumbers. More juicing.

Most of the corn has been harvested but the tomatoes are getting hammered with fruit fly and I’m considering evicting them. I need some kind of an exclusion tunnel for tomatoes I think…

Eggplants have been getting decimated by 28 spot ladybird larvae and I’ve taken the extreme measure of mechanically squishing them. Not something I usually do, but like the rats, they are an infestation that needs to be seen to. There is no natural balance there! Which critter can I attract I wonder that would love a couple of beetles for lunch? And while they’re at it they can have stink bugs for dinner.

Talking of dinner we have eaten the last of the potatoes harvested at the end of November, and just yesterday Lou baked the remaining pumpkin from last years harvest. Bring on the next lot!

Enjoy the video and see you next fortnight.
