Better late than never. With the workshop coming up this weekend, I am struggling to keep on top of everything. Not a lot of sowing or transplanting, just putting the corn seedlings in and planting more corn seeds and some beans.
The video highlights other aspects of growing which are just as important as the veggies – flowers of all different types, and smells to deter pests and attract predator insects. Unfortunately they don’t do much for slugs which are still causing havoc.
I also mention the importance of having a community of people to swap, share and barter with. I could only get F1 corn seeds in the hardware store. F1 means that a company has produced seed that only has one shot. The corn from F1 seeds cannot be saved and used to grow more corn next year. The seed company ensures you are going back there to purchase more seed next year.
The solution is to get hold of open pollinated varieties which you can save yourself. Selina was happy to swap mulberries for some Silvermine corn seeds and I helped her put a net over a large tree. Bargain.
I’ll be back shortly after workshopping up a storm this weekend.
