Planting a Tree

A few tips and tricks when planting a fruit tree, bare root or not.

I don’t plant trees very often these days, the garden is full of them and I’m struggling to find room for more!! For my own curiosity I counted them and the two trees in this video just happen to be number 99 and 100. I only counted four bananas I originally planted and none of the trees that sadly didn’t make it. I also didn’t count any of the shrubs such as blueberries, or the natives that don’t fruit.

The video talks about planting trees on mounds if you have clay soil. If you are planting on a slope, joining up the mounds for multiple trees on contour results in a swale which will encourage water to slow down and soak in.

I touch on this in the video, but for me giving your tree the best start in life is essential. Whilst you have the opportunity to get nutrients around the root ball, don’t skimp on quality ingredients now thinking you can make up for it later. Get it right the first time.

Another great tip for dry areas is to bury a 500mm piece of stormwater pipe vertically next to the tree without disturbing the roots. Filling this pipe with water means the roots get the goods without it evaporating or watering the unwelcome plants. You also know the roots have had a decent amount of water. This idea works really well in community gardens where inexperienced gardeners in training tend not to water enough.
