Funky Chicken Coop

Re-purposing an old shed into a coop.

The brief was to see if we could make a bigger chicken coop so the funky chickens had more room to wiggle. The previous off the shelf commercial version was on its last legs and becoming overcrowded.

Just next door to the old coop was a perfectly good shed on a perfectly good concrete base. A bougainvillea grows on the roof so the shed roof doesn’t get too hot, and it is surrounded by pot plants and a hedge for further passive cooling. It just needed some interior design suitable for all the single ladies.

First we made a plan and agreed on how everything should be laid out incorporating:

  • Increased nesting box capacity
  • Increased roosting perch length
  • A window for ventilation
  • Most importantly, a door that keeps out unwanted night time intruders.

There are a couple of features of the new funky chicken coop worth a mention:

  • The nesting boxes are stand alone and can be picked up and moved if a change of scenery is needed.
  • The ladder just hooks onto the main roost bar. When cleaning out the coop it is easy to lift off and move out of the way.

It was a real treat to be able to breathe new life into the old shed and I’m looking forward to seeing it full of funky chickens!
