Galaxy Garden Update October 2024

The latest update in the veggie patch. Reaping the first harvest of peas. Plenty of growth, lots of potting up, abundant slugs! And some lovely Hippeastrums for something different.

Reading what I wrote for the previous update three weeks ago and peas were on the horizon. Now they are pumping out! The rate of growth recently has been noticeable. After hardly moving for months, the potatoes are all over 300mm clear of the hilled up mounds. Fingers crossed for a great harvest.

One big change this time around has been a decision to increase my workload and pot up seedlings, rather than transplant them straight into the garden bed. Because they are so small from the seedling trays, the slugs just take them straight out in one meal. By potting them up and keeping them sheltered until they are more mature, I’m hoping the seedlings will resist pests and increase the job satisfaction and food on the plate. Another aspect of this is that the potted up plants are outside the greenhouse, and so they are acclimatising to life outside the greenhouse before the shock of being transplanted into the big wide world.

I have also decided not to start any lettuce, pak choi and silverbeet seeds this fortnight as there are plenty in all the wicking beds and I have enough potted up to last quite a while.

Looking forward to how much change the next couple of weeks will bring.
