Sunlight
Yesterday I took a photo every hour (apart from 1pm, I forgot) during the day to show the sunlight hitting the veggie patch. You can see the bananas shade that eastern portion of my patch until probably 10:30am, and then the sun is going behind the trees between 3 and 4pm. Not quite the 6 hours but close enough given that this is when the sun is lowest in the sky and at its minimum arc.
Taking photos at each solstice and each equinox lets you see a balanced picture all year – when the sun is lowest in the sky, highest and at the two midway points. Photos are a great way to:
- Show you what is actually happening, rather than relying on your mental picture – which in my case is not usually focussed the way it should be.
- Record your successes. Great mental boost for those times when the rats eat everything…
- At some point I’ll write about keeping a diary, but photos are another great way of recording what you did and when. Again, mental notes do not operate on the same time schedule as reality in many cases.
- Free your brain up to think about other things knowing you have a record somewhere else. There is a never-ending learning curve, give yourself a break!
